Decorative Accessories Made Using Unique Japanese Techniques

Tsumami Zaiku is a traditional Japanese art form that dates back to the Edo period. This technique involves pinching and folding small squares of thin fabric to create patterns and floral designs. These intricately folded pieces are then mounted onto a base.

Historically, Tsumami Zaiku was primarily used to create Kanzashi*1, traditional Japanese hair ornaments. Originating in the early Edo period, the technique gained immense popularity by the middle of the era. Combs, Kanzashi, and kusudama*2 made using this method became widely sought-after accessories.

In modern times, while Tsumami Zaiku is still prominently featured in celebratory occasions like weddings, Coming of Age ceremonies, and the Shichi-Go-San festival, its application has expanded. Contemporary artisans have developed Tsumami Zaiku accessories and even pet items, integrating this traditional art into everyday life, allowing more people to appreciate and enjoy its beauty.

Kanzashi Earrings Made with Tsumami Zaiku

To stand out on stage and not be overshadowed by a vibrant red dress, we have crafted the traditional Japanese hair ornament, Kanzashi, into earrings using the Tsumami Zaiku technique. Given their volume, we use a lightweight fabric called habutae to ensure they remain light.

You can fully customize the color, size, and number of flowers used in the earrings at our workshop to match your outfit.
