Tatami Loafer Slippers

Liberato’s classic Tatami Loafer Slippers were inspired by ukiyo-e wood block prints, making use of rush—a material used in sandals for centuries to protect the feet of working people. The slippers have a beautiful design that combines high-quality certified eco-leather with fresh green tatami insoles. The part of the shoe that touches the wearer’s instep is unlined to utilize softness of the leather. The sole is made from tatami, which has excellent moisture- and odor-absorbing properties, meaning the shoes can be worn comfortably without socks all day long. Each pair is individually handmade by artisan Japanese shoemakers from carefully selected, eco-friendly materials. These made-for-relaxation loafers can be slipped on quickly and easily and are suitable for either work or home.

Leather Shoes That Can Be Comfortably Worn without Socks

Wearing leather shoes without socks can lead to dampness and foot odor, and tough leather can injure the feet. But Tatami Loafer Slippers are so soft that they can be worn without socks. Whether at home or at work, these leather shoes are relaxing to wear all day.

Insoles Made from Traditional Tatami Rush Matting

The tatami insoles in Tatami Loafer Slippers are made by our craftsmen with the discarded ends of tatami from the island of Kyushu. Each pair of loafers gives the smooth, comfortable, and relaxing sensation of walking barefoot on tatami, even when outside. Because rush is a natural material, the insoles vary in color and shape, and their color may also gradually change from exposure to natural or artificial light. Should the insoles get wet due to rain or other causes, they can be removed from the shoes and dried by hanging them in a well-ventilated space.

An Ethical and Sustainable Product Made from Carefully Selected Japanese Materials of the Highest Quality

Tatami Loafer Slippers are made using surplus hide sourced only from adult meat cows, and the resulting leather is left as close to its natural state as possible. The leather is tanned at a long-established tannery in Himeji using vegetable tannin to reduce the amount of harmful substances produced. The final result is a high-quality leather that has been certified as Japan Eco Leather.
