Traditional Patterns Graphic Database

A collection of digital materials that have been created from traditional patterns actually used in Japan and around the world.

In an effort to bridge authentic traditional patterns used in the past to the next generation, we have digitized these genuine motifs and recreated them as vector data for ease of use in design projects. The collection comprises 2,226 items, including nearly 1,300 Japanese traditional patterns, all systematically categorized and tagged for easy retrieval through search.

We have reproduced the colors used then, but modifications such as color changes and element extraction are freely and easily manageable.

As Tokyo garners global attention and interest in Japan’s traditional culture and unique aesthetics continues to rise, the Monyo Hyakushu leverages Japan’s identity to support new product development and design work.

Seigaiha (Blue Ocean Waves): This pattern of endlessly expanding waves symbolizes wishes for eternal prosperity and a peaceful life.

Kikko (Tortoise Shell): The unbroken hexagonal pattern represents a wish for everlasting prosperity.

Aoikarakusa (Hollyhock Arabesques): The endlessly extending arabesques symbolize life and prosperity.

Kagekumo (Shadow Clouds): Clouds that herald rain symbolize fertility and are believed to bring business prosperity.

The second feature is its quality. The designer meticulously hand-traced each traditional motif found on actual ceramics and kimonos, adjusting the shapes delicately to finalize them as digital data, ensuring they serve as precise templates.

The data is structured as editable vector paths, ensuring the image quality remains intact regardless of magnification.

Furthermore, the data is organized into groups and layers for each object, making it easy to modify designs. This organization allows for straightforward color changes of objects, extraction for standalone use, or background alterations. It facilitates the creation of color patterns and the development of a wide range of color variations.
