Flip-flops created in Japan, where traditional toe straps "hanao" have been used for a long time

Flip-flops are typically composed of just two parts: the sole and the toe strap, providing a challenge to make them unique. However, in collaboration with a factory that has been crafting these sandals since the 1950s, we have carefully refined the thickness and firmness of the sole, length of the straps, position of the holes, and shape of the footbed. This dedication has resulted in the Tsukumo flip-flops, which offer unparalleled cushioning and durability.

The name "Tsukumo" originates from the concept of "tsukumogami," a spirit said to inhabit objects cherished and used for a long time in Japan. We imbue our sandals with this philosophy, hoping they will become beloved companions and to be cherished for years to come.

The craftsmanship behind Tsukumo flip-flops

For over 70 years, we have been crafting flip-flops in Japan, focusing on a design that embodies the pursuit of superior comfort. By increasing the sole thickness to 18 mm (an increase of 3 mm) and achieving an optimal hardness of 50, we've significantly enhanced both cushioning and durability.

We have also refined the fit by carefully handcrafting molds for each pair. The attention to detail ensures the perfect length of the straps and precise positioning of the holes, making sure you feel the difference the moment you slip them on.

To reduce foot strain, we have carefully selected the materials: synthetic rubber for the sole and soft natural rubber for the straps. The design features a tapered shape, with a lower toe and higher heel, to naturally fit the foot's contours.
Additionally, the straps are adorned with the iconic six stripes, a hallmark of Japanese craftsmanship.

A refined pair born from the fusion of traditional craftsmanship and modern technology

Tsukumo flip-flops are lovingly crafted at Japan’s last remaining flip-flop factory, where every step of the process—from producing the soles and straps to cutting and assembly—is handled by skilled hands.

The footbed molds used in production are repaired and reused for decades. A vertical line appearing on the sole after cutting signals the time to sharpen the blades, ensuring consistently high manufacturing quality.

In addition to this artisanal craftsmanship, the factory actively embraces modern techniques such as silk printing, full-color printing, and laser processing. This allows for a wide range of colors and sizes, creating products that combine practicality with individuality and beauty.
